Under the Serpentine

From the bird’s nest stadium to the latest offering for the 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Ai Weiwei and Herzog and de Meuron have teamed again to bring a unique offering for the annual architectural design event. Up until now all the previous pavilions have been vertical structures but this year the designers have taken the pavilion underground.

“This year’s Pavilion will take visitors beneath the Serpentine’s lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Eleven columns characterising each past Pavilion and a twelfth column representing the current structure will support a floating platform roof 1.4 metres above ground.”

The gallery will close to the public in October 2012 where it will move into the private collection of the steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Go and see it here.
